How to Clean a White Carpet

white carpet cleaningWhite carpets are classy and chic, but at the same time are very prone to staining, soiling and susceptible to dirt. This is why, as with any other rug, they need to be maintained on a regular basis, and cleaned properly in order to keep their good look and be safe and healthy. Thoroughly vacuum your white carpet at least once a week, or more often if you have pets, kids or many people at home.

There are some rules you should follow if you want to clean your white rug properly, so it serves you for a long time. Here are some useful tips for cleaning a white carpet by yourself:

Treat the stain as soon as possible

Your dog has peed on the white carpet, or you have spilled some red wine on it? Instead of panicking, take immediate actions to prevent permanent damage. Get a clean white cloth or paper towels and gently blot away as much of the spilled substance as possible. Never rub it around or in, to avoid further damage to the fibres and colours of your carpet. Blot from the outside of the spill towards its middle. Do this until no more spilled liquid remains transferred on your cleaning cloth.

Use a damp clean cloth

Use a damp clean cloth to remove the spot. Blot it as gently as possible. If the stain is a water soluble substance, such as carbonated or alcoholic beverages, urine, mud, dairy products, gravy, latex, jelly and others, dip the cleaning towel in a mixture of lukewarm water with white vinegar and blot it off carefully. Repeat until the stain is no longer visible. Then rinse the spot with a damp cloth and press some paper towels on top of it in order to remove as much of the water from the white carpet as possible.

Make your own cleaning solution

If you accidentally get blood, coffee, tea, wine, chocolate, mustard or vomit on the white carpeting, make a mixture of a cup of water with a tablespoon of ammonia, or mild dishwashing detergent for wool white carpets. Spray the mixture on the stain and blot the affected area with a clean cloth or a sponge. Repeat until there are no traces of the spilled substance on the cloth. Use clean water to rinse the area by dabbing it meticulously after you are done with the stain removal. Apply paper towels on top and press them on in order to get as much water out of the carpeting as possible.
