stain_wool.rugYour child, your pet or a guest – you never know who will become “guilty” of soiling hat perfect and beautiful wool rug you have in the living room. The key is to abstain from panicking or getting angry. If you want to save the rug from permanent staining and restore it to its original condition you need to act fast and treat the spill properly so that the rug is spot-free, odour free and as good as new once again.

Here is how you can safely and efficiently clean the stains and spills from your wool carpet or rug:

Carefully pick up the mess and blot off any excess liquid and material which is spilled on the rug. Do this with a clean towel and with gentle blotting movements from the outside toward the inside of the stain. When as much as possible of the spilled stuff is removed proceed to sprinkle the affected area with baking soda. Be generous and cover the stained area with the baking soda. Once it has sat for about half an hour, use a vacuum cleaner to remove it.

Pour some lukewarm water in a mixing bowl and add white vinegar and some mild dish washing detergent. Never apply solutions which have bleach or can otherwise damage the wool rugs’ colour or fibers. Dip a clean white cloth, towel or sponge in the mixture and gently blot the soiled area from the outside towards the center of the stain, careful not to further embed the spilled substance in the carpet, and not to increase the size of the spot.

After the stain is washed, use a damp cloth to rinse it. Again, don’t rub it in or oversaturate the rug.

When you are done with the washing and rinsing, press several paper towels on top of the spot, or use a dry towel to absorb as much water as possible from the rug and the floor. Leave the windows open or use a fan to enhance the drying process.

Remember, that whatever type of solution you are planning to use to treat stains or to clean your wool carpet, always perform a test on a hidden small spot on the rug first to observe whether there is a negative reaction to it. If everything is OK, you can proceed with the cleaning and stain removal.

To remove bad odour from your wool rug, sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit overnight. On a net day shake the rug off or vacuum it to remove the powder along with the bad smell.
